I hate to be a Negative Nellie, but using a hard, flat object like a rifle or a baseball bat as a descender wouldn’t work. It’d be impossible to keep it balanced correctly, and would consequently slide until it caught on something. That something would be the hand of the person holding it, and then the rope or cable would proceed to strip the flesh off of said hand. Not pretty.

Ha ha, you can be a Negative Nellie, I don’t mind. And you’re probably right! I wouldn’t know though, since I’ve never zip-lined onto a spanish warship filled with zombie conquistadors. I’ll add it to my bucket list.

You know, this makes for an exciting story and all. But… why don’t they just use explosive rounds (like they were using on the pterodactyls earlier) or something and punch holes in the wood hull to let them sink? At the very least, after boarding a vessel they could plant explosive charges and blow huge holes in the hull, then flee. Fighting mano-a-mano on each ship is going to lead to needless casualties. And, for all we know, couldn’t that Montezuma bring back the dead airmen as more undead followers?

Good point, I actually kind of address that in a few pages as they struggle to destroy these ghost ships. They realize that you can destroy a ghost ship but it just comes back as….another ghost ship!
